Family history

The personal information that was collected during the 2011 Census will be kept confidential for 100 years. That means in 2111 your descendents can trace their family roots.

Details of more than 4.7million Scots counted in the 1911 Census were made available for the first time – on 5 April 2011. This adds to the statistical census results available for the period since 1801 which provide such valuable information on Scotland’s past.

From 1841, each census generally gives a snapshot of the people in a household on census night and provides an indication of how and where they lived. Geographic mobility can be tracked through the given birthplaces and social mobility through addresses and occupations.

The National Records of Scotland holds the census records for the whole of Scotland. Online access to the indexes and images for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 are available on ScotlandsPeople.

The statistical reports from the censuses of 1801 to 1931 are available at Histpop - The Online Historical Population Reports.
